Bars in Koh Phangan
Koh Phangan's nightlife is famous for one event and shaped by many more. There is a monthly calendar of parties that the island runs on, and separately there is a west coast full of bars where the point is the sunset and nothing else happens at all. Both are real, and they suit completely different evenings.
The party calendar
The Full Moon Party at Haad Rin is monthly and is the one everyone has heard of: sound systems along the beach, DJs through the night, and thousands of people. Around it sit the Half Moon Festival in the jungle near Ban Tai, an electronic event with proper staging and lighting, and Black Moon Culture, which is smaller and leans psychedelic and trance. Eden Garden and Guy's Bar at Haad Yuan run the intimate, all-night version in a bohemian setting reached by boat.
Going to Haad Rin
If you are attending, a few practical things matter more than which sound system you stand in front of. Sort your transport back before you go, because the road out of Haad Rin at four in the morning is the hardest part of the night. Take only what you can afford to lose. Wear something on your feet — the beach is not clean by morning. And drink water alongside everything else.
The sunset bars
Amsterdam Bar
On the hillside at Wok Tum, west-facing, with reggae and one of the best sunsets on the island. Unhurried, cheap and full of people who have been on Phangan a while.
Three Sixty Bar
On the cliff above Haad Yao, with a panoramic view up and down the coast. Cocktails, a long deck and no reason to rush — the most composed drink available on the island.
SAUDADE Sunset Beach Bar
A small cocktail bar on the sand with the sunset straight ahead. Relaxed, unshowy, and the sort of place to arrive at an hour before the light goes and stay past it.
Practical notes
- Dress codes barely exist; beachwear is normal almost everywhere
- Drink water, and keep an eye on your belongings in crowds
- Arrange transport in advance after any of the big nights
- Check the moon calendar before booking — it changes the price and the mood of the whole island
The quiet version of a night out
Away from Haad Rin and the party calendar, evenings on Phangan finish early and start at sunset. The west coast bars fill in the late afternoon, the sun goes down over the water, and by ten most of them are winding up. For a lot of visitors that is the better island, and it is available on twenty-nine nights out of thirty.
A note on the beach parties
The jungle and beach events are organised, ticketed and well attended, and they are also a long way from where you are probably staying. Transport there is easy and transport back at four in the morning is not, so sort the return first. Everything else about the night is easier than that part.
What a night costs
Phangan is cheap by Thai island standards and the gap between the sunset bars and the party nights is mostly the ticket. A beer at a west-coast bar costs very little; a big event adds entry, transport both ways and whatever you spend once you are there. Neither is expensive by the standards of home, and knowing which kind of night you are having makes budgeting for it simple.
